To celebrate ‘Athelstan Day’, the exact date of the 1100th anniversary of his coronation, All Saints Kingston will be inviting celebrated Athelstan scholars and local dignitaries to unveil the seven stunning embroideries of the Saxon Kings believed to have been crowned on this site. These contemporary life-sized embroidery panels have been created by award winning textile artist Jacky Puzey and embellished by Beatrice Mayfield.
The Grand Unveiling at 2pm will be followed the Athelstan Anniversary Address at 2.30pm. This will be given by Tom Holland, known to many from the hugely popular podcast The Rest is History. His talk is entitled: “The Golden Generations: The Founding Family of England”. It will bring to life the amazing feats of Alfred the Great, followed by his children Edward the Elder and Lady Aethelflaed, and then Edward’s son, Athelstan, who became the first monarch who could legitimately claim to have unified the whole of England, if not Britain.
