SUMMARY:Cross Stitch Craft Group
DESCRIPTION:Join Ariadne’s thread every other Thursday 10.30am-12.30pm in the café area (dates may vary\, please check our website calendar for confirmation).\nA large embroidery frame will be set up in the café area for members of the group to work on the design together. New participants are welcome to join in. No experience is necessary\, all needles and threads will be provided. Ariadne’s thread hopes that the completed tapestry will one day find a suitable home in a museum of Ukrainian cultural heritage.\nAriadne’s Thread Group was set up to provide access to culture\, heritage and social activities to vulnerable communities in particular those displaced by conflicts and those with disabilities. The current piece being worked on is “Blue Cornflowers”\, a tapestry which began life as a participatory needlework for local Ukrainian women in Kingston on 23 May 2022. What started as a regular activity during Ariadne’s Thread’s Monday meetings at Baking Ideas in Tolworth\, very quickly developed into a broader collaboration with refugees stitching smaller pieces from across Europe. This is an ongoing project. Half of the tapestry is completed and so far over 160 people from different backgrounds\, ages and abilities have contributed to this cross-stitching effort.\nFor more information and contact details please go to www.ariadnesthreadgroup.org or magdalena@ariadnesthreadgroup.org

SUMMARY:Evening Embroidery Talk
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an evening viewing of the 10th Century Kings with a talk on the history of the Saxon Kings and the creation of the embroidery panels.\nBar available. Enjoy a glass of Prosecco under the gaze of the Kings.\nSeven Kings\, including the first “Kings of England” are traditionally thought to have been crowned at Kingston Upon Thames. Before All Saints Church was built\, the site was an important estate of the West Saxon Kings and host to Royal coronations. Our talk will tell this significant heritage story through the series of seven spectacular and unique embroidery panels (four of which are currently displayed) touching on the Saxon history of the area\, the reigns of the Kings and characters depicted\, and the incredible talent that has gone into the design and execution of the panels themselves.\nEmbroidery panels have a long tradition of being used as symbols of power or to tell a story to enforce a message. Such works can be found in the great houses of the nobility or wealthy merchants\, royal palaces and of course\, in churches. Join us as we delve into these amazing works of textile art.\nThe panels are being created by award winning contemporary embroiderer Jacky Puzey\, based on an original design by Sophia Pearson. Jacky’s speciality of machine embroidery is further embellished with hand embroidery and beading by Beatrice Mayfield\, contemporary hand embroiderer and visiting lecturer at the Royal School of Needlework.\nOur embroideries headlined an edition of the national “embroidery magazine”. Read the article here https://allsaintskingston.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Embroidery-Magazine-full-Article-March-2025.pdf Come and see them in person!\nFor further details\, please visit our website https://allsaintskingston.co.uk/the-seven-saxon-kings-embroidery-project
